     Definition of “Element”
Element is the building block of all matter on Earth. It is a pure substance. Elements can be separated into anything simpler physically or by chemical reactions. They are listed in the Periodic Table of Elements.

WHAT IS THE PERIODIC TABLE?

The Periodic Table is a graph that lists all the known chemical elements. There are exactly 118 elements in the table. Again, elements are the basic building blocks of all matter.

CHEMICAL SYMBOLS

Each element has a chemical symbol. These are one or two letters, and short way of representing that element. For example, the chemical symbol for Oxygen is O and the symbol for Iron is Fe.

The elements are listed in the Periodic table in order of increasing Atomic Number – the number shown upon element. Elements can be Metallic and Non-metallic. Metallic elements are about 2/3 of the all elements and are found on the left of the Periodic table. Non-metallic elements are about 1/3 of the elements and are found on the upper right of the Periodic table.
